WhatsApp keeps your chats inside WhatsApp. Android only ever sees the notifications WhatsApp shows. A notification history keeps a copy of those notifications, which is useful when a notification is swiped away, when a message is edited, or when a message disappears from the notification. This guide explains what that copy can and cannot contain, so you know what to expect before you rely on it.

The short answer

A WhatsApp notification history keeps the text of messages that arrived as notifications on your phone, after you set it up. With Saksi it also shows proven edits with the earlier version, and marks a message that disappeared from a notification as a possible deletion.

  • What it cannot do: show messages that never appeared as a notification, open WhatsApp's own storage, or prove that a disappeared message was deleted.

What a WhatsApp notification contains

When a message arrives and WhatsApp posts a notification, Android receives:

  • The sender's name, and the group name for group chats.
  • The message text. When several messages arrive, the notification usually lists the most recent ones from that chat.
  • For photos, videos, voice messages and documents, usually a short description, such as a caption or a file name. The file itself is rarely included in a form other apps can read.

WhatsApp does not post a notification in some common situations, and then there is nothing for any notification history to keep:

  • The chat is open on your screen while the message arrives.
  • The chat or group is muted.
  • WhatsApp notifications are switched off in Android's settings, or in WhatsApp's own settings.

Option 1: Android's built‑in notification history

On Android 11 and later, the Notification history setting keeps WhatsApp notifications for about 24 hours, starting from the moment you turn it on. It has no labels for edits or deletions, and older entries drop off after a day. The Android notification history guide shows where to find it.

Option 2: A local history with Saksi

Saksi saves WhatsApp notifications into a private history on your phone. Each message gets a label that says what Saksi actually saw. These are the labels you will see in the app:

  • New: the first time Saksi saw this message.
  • Message edited: in one to one chats, the notification showed clear proof of an edit. Saksi keeps the earlier version.
  • Caption edited: a proven edit to the text on a photo or video.
  • Deleted: WhatsApp's own notification said the message was deleted, which Saksi recognizes in English and Indonesian today. Saksi kept what it saw before.
  • Possible deletion (unconfirmed): the message is no longer in the notification. This often means it was deleted, but it is not confirmed.
  • Dismissed: you swiped the notification away. This is not a deletion.
  • Cleared: WhatsApp or Android removed the notification. This is not a deletion.

Saksi works with the notifications WhatsApp shows on your phone. Saksi is not affiliated with WhatsApp.

Edited WhatsApp messages

When someone edits a message they sent you, WhatsApp may update the notification on your phone with the new text. If that happens and the update clearly matches the earlier message, Saksi labels it Message edited and keeps both versions. Tap See what changed to compare the earlier version with the edited one. The docs page on edited messages shows every detail.

Two things decide whether you see this:

  • Saksi can keep the earlier version only if WhatsApp updated its notification when the message was edited. If the notification was already gone, there is nothing to compare.
  • Edit labels are claimed for one to one chats. WhatsApp groups use the same handling but have not had their own test run. When Saksi cannot prove that a change was an edit, it shows Updated instead, which means the notification changed but Saksi cannot say how.

Deleted WhatsApp messages: what a notification can tell you

This is the part most people ask about, so here is exactly what Saksi can and cannot show.

If a message reached your phone as a notification before it was deleted, Saksi may already have its text. What Saksi then shows depends on what WhatsApp did with the notification:

  • WhatsApp replaced the message with its own deletion notice. Saksi marks the message Deleted and keeps the text it saw before. This label appears only when WhatsApp itself shows a deletion notice in its notification. Saksi recognizes this notice in English and Indonesian today. On a phone where WhatsApp runs in another language, the same event shows as a possible deletion at most.
  • The message simply vanished from the notification. Saksi marks it Possible deletion (unconfirmed). Messages can drop out of a notification for other reasons too, so this is a hint, never proof.

And what it cannot do:

  • If the message was deleted before a notification appeared, or while the chat was open on screen, there was nothing to save.
  • Saksi cannot read messages from WhatsApp's chat storage or backups, and it is not a recovery tool.
  • A notification that disappeared is never proof that the sender deleted a message.

The docs page on deleted and disappeared notifications explains each case.

Photos, videos, voice messages and documents

Saksi saves a copy of a photo or file only when Android gives it access. With WhatsApp that is the exception, not the rule: usually Saksi keeps the caption and a reference to the file instead. In the Media tab each item says what happened, for example:

  • Saved on this device: Saksi has its own copy.
  • Notification reference · no saved file: the notification described a file but did not include a readable copy.
  • Not accessible from this notification: Android did not allow Saksi to read the file.

If you want to keep a file that Saksi could not save, use Import a file in the Media tab. Imported files are kept on your phone and are not linked to a conversation. Files over 20 MB are not saved. More in the docs: photos and files.

How to set up Saksi for WhatsApp

Saksi is coming to Google Play and needs Android 8.0 or later.

  1. Open Saksi and tap Open Notification Access, then turn Saksi on in the Android list.
  2. Check that WhatsApp notifications are on for the chats you care about, in WhatsApp and in Android's settings.
  3. WhatsApp is saved by default. You can check it in Saksi under Settings, Capture & Apps, App Filter.
  4. In your phone's Settings, open Apps, Saksi, Battery, and choose Unrestricted, so Android does not stop Saksi in the background.

To confirm everything works, open Settings, Capture & Apps in Saksi. The capture status shows whether Saksi is connected and when it last saw WhatsApp or Telegram notifications.

Alerts for edits and possible deletions

Saksi can alert you about proven edits, confirmed deletions and possible deletions. Alerts are normal Android notifications. Your notification and Do Not Disturb settings decide whether they pop up. Every alert is also kept in the Alerts inbox inside the app, and possible deletions are always labelled as possible. You can change alerts in Settings, Message alerts.

Limits to keep in mind

  • Saksi only saves notifications that arrive after you turn on Notification Access.
  • The free archive keeps 7 days. Older items are deleted automatically, about once a day, and cannot be restored.
  • Group chats are saved as notifications. Edit labels are claimed for one to one chats; WhatsApp groups use the same handling but have not had their own test run.
  • Saksi keeps what notifications showed on your own phone. It does not change anything in WhatsApp.
  • A receipt you share from Saksi shows what your phone's notification showed. It is not verification by WhatsApp.

Your history stays on your phone

Everything Saksi saves stays on your phone. There is no account, nothing is uploaded to Saksi servers, and nothing is shared unless you choose to share it. Delete all data erases Saksi's archive, saved files and alerts on your phone, then pauses capture. It does not delete messages in WhatsApp or copies you already shared.

Read more about how Saksi handles each app on the supported apps page, see all features, or read the WhatsApp page in the Saksi docs for setup help and troubleshooting.

Keep a private notification history

Saksi keeps the last 7 days of your notifications on your phone. No account needed.
